About me

My name is Matheus, also known as Mati. From an early age, I was fascinated by video games, drawing, and technology. In 2019, I began studying game design, which gave me the opportunity to systematically develop creative concepts and put them into practice.

In 2023, I completed my bachelor's degree at HTW Berlin. Since then, I have been continuously working on creative and technical projects and am also involved in teaching.

Video games are the most diverse medium because they can contain everything. They take place on the internet or in analog form, can be two- or three-dimensional, and contain elements of storytelling, film art, and painting. If anything is art, it's games.” - Matheus

Philosophy

I was interested in video games even as a child. My curiosity about how games work led me to start exploring PCs and consoles at an early age and develop a feel for technology. At the same time, I spent a lot of time drawing and inventing my own worlds.

Both areas continue to shape me today, and I am delighted that they have ultimately become my profession. Game design is much more than a single profession. Design processes take place everywhere: from the sensible placement of products in supermarkets to medical apps designed to motivate users.

The field is also broad in technical terms. Game engines combine 2D and 3D animations, programming, artificial intelligence for enemy behavior, and many other aspects.

I see myself as both a programmer and an artist. For me, programming is a creative medium that enables me to implement the most versatile of all media: video games.

Values & Responsibility

I do not separate creative work from the person who creates it, and I understand design as an expression of one’s values. In my work, I place strong emphasis on accessibility, equality, and a queer-inclusive perspective. Design, to me, carries responsibility. Games and interactive systems reach a wide audience and shape how content is perceived and experienced.

For this reason, I aim to design systems that are as inclusive and respectful as possible. I am aware that there is no perfect solution and that design remains an ongoing learning process. Mistakes cannot always be avoided. What matters is taking different perspectives seriously, engaging with criticism, and refining one’s work accordingly. This approach informs both my conceptual decisions and my technical implementation.

Biography

Since 2020, I have been working as a teacher of IT subjects for children and young people. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for programming and helping others to develop a technical understanding. In addition, I currently teach game technology at the University of Applied Sciences.

Professionally, I have gained a wide range of experience as a software developer. At Ababax GmbH, I worked on an app that was used in studies on Alzheimer's therapy and, together with a colleague, implemented a virtual hospital in VR with meta-avatars. For Eemagine Medical Imaging Solutions GmbH, I developed a 3D simulation in Blender and Python to test and evaluate the movement capabilities of a collaborative robot.

In addition to my job and studies, I am continuously working on my own game projects. I am currently developing a larger game with a team of four people, while also working on smaller projects in Unreal and Unity. These personal projects allow me to directly implement my ideas and continuously learn.
